It is important to check the condition of your caravan tyres before any long journey and it is essential that they are well maintained and inspected on a regular basis.
Generally your caravan is only used once or twice a year during the holiday periods and this can sometimes lull you into thinking that you do not have to check your vehicle tyres as often. Whilst it will take some time for the tyre to reach the minimum legal requirement, tyres will deteriorate with age and still require regular inspection and replacement where necessary.
If your caravan is left stationary for long periods of time in the elements, the tyres can become susceptible to flat spots which can lead to a weakening and a puncture.
It is recommended that you replace your caravan tyres every 5 years and never use a tyre that is older than 7 years.
It is important to note that a tyre will begin to age from the date it was manufactured and not the date that it is actually fitted to your vehicle.
When replacing you Caravan Tyres it is important to note the following:
- Ensure that the correct specification of tyre is fitted to your caravan all four tyres fitted should be of the same specification.
- Tyre pressures need to be equal across all tyres.
- You must carry an appropriate spare wheel for the caravan.
- All of the above applies for the spare caravan tyre.
